Content introduction
This book is the first intellectual biography of the great English scholar, philosopher and historian David Hume. The book describes the major events of Hume's life, places all of Hume's works in a historical context, analyzes the differences between Hume's various literary styles, and reveals the major influences on the development of Hume's thought. The author pays close attention to Hume's interest as a philosophical analyst, and carefully combs the ideological relations between Hume and his contemporaries. Harris's Hume was passionate about the Enlightenment's ideals of open, objective, rigorous, and dispassionate dialogue on all major issues.

James A. Harris is Professor of the History of Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews, author of Liberty and Necessity: A Discussion of Free Will in Eighteenth-century English Philosophy (2005), editor of the Oxford Volume of Eighteenth-century English Philosophy (2013), and co-editor with Alan Gleit of Eighteenth-century Scottish Philosophy (Volume I) (2015).
About the Translator
Zhang Zhengping is an associate professor at the School of History, Zhejiang University. She is a social science scholar of "Zhijiang Youth" in Zhejiang Province. She has been a visiting scholar at Cambridge University, Glasgow University and Nagoya University in Japan. Her research direction is Scottish Enlightenment. He is the author of Passion and Wealth: Hume's Science of Human Nature and its Political Economy, The Social Conception of Commerce in the Scottish Enlightenment, and the History of Theft.
