Professor of anthropology at Yale University, his works mainly focus on the impact of the post-industrial transformation of the United States on society, such as the industries and occupations that disappear after the post-industrial transformation of the United States, and the survival conditions of traditional industries in the post-industrial era. He is the author of "Vanishing Production Lines: Unemployment and Renewal in Post-Industrial America" and "Debt and Deprivation: Farms in Rural America."
