本书是一部叙述微生物与社会互动的生物社会学著作。作者描绘了人类与微生物之间永无止境的斗争史程，介绍了诸多影响对决结果的关键因素。自原始社会以来，人类经历了五次流行病学转型，诸如黑死病、天花、西班牙流感等大流行对历史进程、文明兴衰、心理发展都产生了重要影响。而人类不仅取得了疫苗、抗生素等医学突破，其行为对生态环境的改变也起到了决定性作用。作者还细数人类未来可能面临的新病大患，如抗生素耐药性、生物武器、新发传染病等微生物威胁，并提出了相关对策。

Big History of Microorganisms
This book is a biosociological account of the interaction between microorganisms and society. The author charts the history of the never-ending struggle between humans and microbes, and describes the many key factors that affect the outcome. Since primitive society, humanity has undergone five epidemiological transitions, and pandemics such as the Black Death, smallpox, and Spanish flu have had an important impact on the course of history, the rise and fall of civilizations, and psychological development. Human beings have not only made medical breakthroughs such as vaccines and antibiotics, but their behavior has also played a decisive role in changing the ecological environment. The authors also detail the major new diseases that mankind may face in the future, such as antibiotic resistance, biological weapons, emerging infectious diseases and other microbial threats, and put forward relevant countermeasures.
