MatthewLockwood, an assistant professor of history atthe University of Alabama, received his PhD from Yale University in 2014. His research focuses on 18th-century Britain and its history of empire, crime and violence, comparative legal history, state formation, and immigration, and is the author of Death's Conquest: Violence and the Birth of Modern Britain.
