The Court of the Italian Renaissance
Court culture is a unique cultural phenomenon in the Italian Renaissance. City-states ruled by princes and nobles competed with each other and relied on artistic patronage to enhance the legitimacy and authority of their rule. Major artists and architects (such as Mantegna, Pisanello, Bramante, Leonardo Da Vinci) were commissioned by the courts they served, and oversaw their architectural projects and entertainment. The creation of bronze medallions, clay and gold decorated manuscripts and tapestries was inspired by ancient Roman coins, Byzantine ivory products and French chivalric novels, showing a flourishing creative scene.
In this authoritative study, Alison Cole focuses on the unique use of art by the five courts of the Italian Renaissance - Naples, Urbino, Ferrara, Mantova, and Milan - distilling and reproducing the important creative motivations behind different regional cultures and "court styles," exploring the relationship between court power and artistic creation. By focusing on the artists involved, the paper analyzes the complex sources, complex expressions and lasting influence of the "court art style" on the history of art.
