本书探讨的话题即在特定社会文化背景下的语言生活。爱德华兹在书中广泛借鉴社会语言学、语言社会学和心理语言学等领域的观点，以语言与身份的关系为线索，串联起了本书覆盖的种种议题，如语言变异与变化，语言态度与偏见，语言濒危与保护，语言转用与复兴等等。本书更多地关注宏观的社会学领域，不对语言特征的变化做精细的分析。于是，我们在书中可以看到诸多有趣的社会话题，如语言和方言的不同社会评价，社会经济阶层对语言行为的影响，语言与性别的关系等。

约翰·爱德华兹加拿大圣弗朗西斯泽维尔大学心理学教授，加拿大皇家学会会员，《多语言和多文化发展杂志》主编。主要研究兴趣为群体身份的建立、维持和连续性，特别是语言在交际和象征方面的研究。出版《语言与身份》（2009）、《语言社会生活中的挑战》（2011）、《多语言现象：理解语言的多样性》（2012）等多部专著。

徐大明南京大学文学院教授，南京大学社会语言学实验室主任，澳大利亚西悉尼大学兼职教授，国际城市语言学会会长。曾在新加坡南洋理工大学、北京大学、澳门大学任教，兼任中国社会语言学会副会长，国际中国语言学学会执行理事。出版《当代社会语言学》（1997）、《新加坡华社语言调查》（2005）、《社会语言学研究》（2007）、《社会语言学实验教程》（2010），主编《语言变异与变化》（2006）等。
Sociolinguistics
This book deals with the topic of language life in a particular socio-cultural context. In the book, Edwards draws extensively on the perspectives of sociolinguistics, sociology of language and psycholinguistics, and takes the relationship between language and identity as the clues to connect the various issues covered by the book, such as language variation and change, language attitudes and prejudices, language endangers and protection, language reuse and revival, and so on. This book focuses more on the macroscopic sociological field, and does not make a detailed analysis of the changing characteristics of language. As a result, we can see many interesting social topics in the book, such as the different social evaluation of language and dialects, the influence of socioeconomic class on language behavior, and the relationship between language and gender.

John Edwards is Professor of Psychology at St. Francis Xavier University, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development. His main research interests are the establishment, maintenance and continuity of group identity, especially the communicative and symbolic aspects of language. He has published several books, including Language and Identity (2009), Challenges in Linguistic Social Life (2011), and Multilingualism: Understanding Linguistic Diversity (2012).
