Introduction to the contents of Galileo's Error
The failure of the natural sciences to explain consciousness seems to force us to choose between physicalism, which implies denying the reality of our consciousness and subjective experience, and a kind of dualism, which poses more problems. Panpsychism, as the third solution, has attracted much attention from philosophers and neuroscientists in recent years, and many believe that it is closer to the goal of solving the problem of consciousness. According to this theory, consciousness is a fundamental, universal feature of the physical world, and our consciousness appears unique in the physical world because it is the only window we currently have into the inner nature of matter. This book reviews the advantages and disadvantages of the three approaches to solving the problem of consciousness, and provides a powerful defense of panpsychism with a concise philosophical argument. It is a good introduction to the frontiers of consciousness science.
