The Madhouse at the End of the World

Brief introduction of contents:

From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century was the heyday of great navigation, and all countries were eager to explore the polar regions. This ambition was not limited to developed powers such as Britain, Norway and the United States, and even Belgium, which had a weak maritime tradition, wanted to enhance national confidence through geographical discovery.

In August 1897, the Belgian baron and explorer de Gerrash boarded the "Belgium" with a dream of glory, and set sail from the port of Antwerp to the unknown end of the earth: the icy Antarctic continent.

De Gerash's plan will soon go awry. After a near-mutiny, a near-shipwreck, and an actual death, the Belgian plunges into the depths of the ice pack as winter approaches, falling into a prison of ice and snow. As the sun sets for the last time over the magnificent Antarctic landscape, almost all activity grinds to a halt, and survival becomes the team's full-time job. And between the bland canned food and the same routine, madness hung over the ship like a ghost, looking for the weakest of victims...

Focusing on three main characters - in addition to de Gerash, who is on a national and family mission, Roald Amundsen, the Belgian's first officer and soon-to-be-legendary Norwegian, and Fredrik Cooke, the team doctor and photographer, who is part genius, part fraud - this book tells a little-known but vital part of the history of polar exploration.
