This ambition was not limited to developed powers such as Britain, Norway and the United States, and even Belgium, which had a weak maritime tradition, wanted to enhance national confidence through geographical discovery.
In August 1897, the Belgian baron and explorer de Gerrash boarded the "Belgium" with a dream of glory, and set sail from the port of Antwerp to the unknown end of the earth: the icy Antarctic continent.
De Gerash's plan will soon go awry. After a near-mutiny, a near-shipwreck, and an actual death, the Belgian plunges into the depths of the ice pack as winter approaches, falling into a prison of ice and snow. Julian Sankerton is a writer and editor whose work on culture and travel has appeared in The New Yorker, GQ, Vanity Fair and Esquire. Sankerton has reported on all continents, and it was during research for this book that he first visited Antarctica. Sankerton spent most of his childhood in France, studied European history at Harvard, and now lives in New York State with his partner and two daughters.
