(E.T.Jaynes)
Introduction to the content of Meditations on Probability Theory
Probability theory, as an extension of logic, is the basis of all scientific inference. Jaynes shows that probability theory is far more widely applied than traditional frequency theorists assume. This book collects various clues of probability statistics, integrates probability theory and statistical inference, and vividly discusses its wide application in mathematics, physics, economics, chemistry, and biology, revealing the mystery behind many paradoxes. Particular attention is paid to Bayesian theory, which proves that when there is a correspondence between probability and objective frequency, the Bayesian probability distribution always smoothly translates into an objective frequency distribution. The book is comprehensive with lots of exercises.
About the author
Edwin Thompson Jaynes (E.T.Jaynes)
A renowned mathematical physicist and former professor at Washington University in St. Louis and Stanford University, he has made outstanding contributions to statistical mechanics and probabilistic statistical inference. The maximum entropy interpretation of thermodynamics was published in 1957, and in 1963, together with Fred Cummings, the evolution of a two-level atom in an electromagnetic field was simulated in a fully quantized manner, a model called the Jaynes Cummings model. Jaynes was a strong advocate of interpreting probability theory as an extension of logic.
