"Hacker" content introduction
This 25th anniversary edition of StevenLevy's classic, spanning from the early 1950s to the late 1980s, traces the exploits of the early hackers of the computer revolution, who were among the brightest and most personalized of the elite. They took risks, challenged the rules, and pushed the world in a whole new direction. The book is updated with the latest information on some of the most famous hackers, including Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Richard Stallman, and Steve Wozniak, and tells some interesting stories from the early computer research LABS to the first home computers.
Levy describes them as smart, hard-working people who are highly imaginative and who find ingenious solutions to computer engineering problems outside the box. They all share a common value, the "hacker ethic," which is still alive and well today. The book describes an embryonic period in recent history, the unheralded actions of hackers who lit the way for today's digital world, the MIT students who broke the rules of "illegal" access to punched card computers, and the DIY culture that produced such great products as the Altair and AppleII.
