He is President of the International Society for the History of Science, a member of the Needham Institute at the University of Cambridge, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of Edinburgh, and a recipient of the Leonardo Da Vinci Medal. He is the author of a History of Science and Technology in China: Agriculture (Ed. Joseph Needham), Rice Economy: Technology and Development in Asian Societies, Technology and Gender: Power in Late Imperial China, and Technology in World Civilization.
