The Source of Good and Evil

Do babies have moral sense? How do we become moral people? Does rational thought matter little to moral decision making? Paul Bloom combines deep ideas from psychology, behavioral economics, evolutionary biology, and philosophy to explore how we can transcend the limits of innate morality. At the same time, he examines the morals of chimpanzees, psychopaths and Ivy League professors, exploring our troubling moral feelings about sex, politics, religion and race.

The authors cite groundbreaking research from Yale University in the United States that shows that long before babies can speak or walk, they have the ability to judge the good or bad behavior of others, develop empathy and compassion, and develop a primitive sense of justice. But the innate morality of human beings is still very limited, and sometimes it can lead to tragedy, for example, we are born to hate strangers, and we are prone to paranoia and narrowness. Bloom also pointed out that reason is closely related to moral judgment, and that reason and reflection allow us to make moral decisions, such as that slavery is wrong. Ultimately, we can transcend the primitive moral emotions we are born with, the limitations of infancy, through imagination, compassion, and our uniquely human capacity for rational thought.

Many well-known scholars and experts recommend. Steven Pinker, professor of psychology at Harvard University: One of the most interesting discoveries in 21st century psychology is that babies have a rich cognitive and moral life. But what does the study of infant cognition and morality reveal about human nature? Paul Bloom uses his trademark writing style - clarity, depth, subtlety and elegance - to answer the question. Jonathan HaidT, AUTHOR of The Mind of Justice: Paul Bloom shows how a leading scientist can combine contradictory findings, extensive research, and deep human concern to create a nuanced and surprising portrait of the essence of humanity, in all its beauty, horror, and wonder. Peng Kaiping, Director of the psychology Department of Tsinghua University: The struggle between good and evil is one of the eternal themes of human life. However, it is a new and fascinating Angle to explore the conflict, limitation, transformation, transcendence and sublimation of morality from the origin of good and evil of infants. This makes us more deeply realize that using scientific psychology to study human morality may be more able to grasp the essence of human nature.
