"Living on Bamboo" content introduction

This book Outlines the 20th century social history of a community of rural artisans in Sichuan. The village is located in Jiajiang County between Chengdu and Leshan. Traditionally, local residents have made a living by making paper by hand, using the natural native bamboo as raw material, and have formed specific kinship networks and forms of community organization around this core skill. The topic of "skills" runs through the book in two interrelated threads: technical and social. The author attempts to gain a more thorough understanding of the living world of rural people by focusing on the relevant details of a kind of skilled labor.

After entering the 20th century, Jiajiang's handmade papermaking technology faced a series of major impacts, such as dynasty change, war, revolution, collectivization, the concept and construction practice of modernization, reform and opening up, and marketization. Each of these major social changes under the macro background of "urban-rural divide" prompted papermakers to redefine their identity at the technical and social levels. The book traces the shift in the distribution of knowledge over the course of a century, which led to a massive shift in control of skills from rural to urban, from primary producers to managerial elites, and from women to men. In the author's view, papermaking skill is a resource that is to be distributed and fought for. From this unique point of view, the author begins with a case study of traditional skills to intervene in thinking about the big question: how the modernization process of revolution, nation-building, and marketization changed rural China in the 20th century.
