A brief introduction to Special Treatment
Excellence cannot be isolated on an island; it must be brought into the mainstream of public life.
Through in-depth ethnographic research, the book reveals in detail the uniqueness and workings of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). As the best medical school and tertiary general hospital in South Asia, with an admission rate of less than 0.1%, AIIMS also reflects and reproduces class and gender inequalities in Indian society in the process of training the medical elite.
The book paints a vivid picture of AIIMS students' admissions process, learning experiences, daily life, and interactions with patients, demonstrating the great contrast between inside and outside this prestigious institution. In particular, through the learning experience of medical students in outpatient clinics and wards, it points out that the patient labor force actually becomes an educational resource, and reflects on the shaping of hidden curriculum on the value and career view of medical students. The author also uses solid field data to show the impact of the development of highly specialized medical education on the training of general practitioners, revealing the challenges facing the Indian healthcare system.
By reviewing the history of AIIMS, analyzing its educational system and social role, the author reflects on medical education during the epidemic period, and puts forward suggestions for training socially responsible doctors and the future development of medical education.

AnnaRuddock is a medical anthropologist, author and disability rights defender with a PhD in anthropology from King's College London and a research fellow at the Centre for South Asian Studies, University of Oxford.

She worked as a research assistant at the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, focusing on medical anthropology, translational research, clinical medical education and healthcare mobility.
