Content introduction

"On this Side of the Oder" is the first short story collection of German talented female writer Yudit Heilmann, originally named "Summer House, After", which caused a sensation in the literary world when it was published in 1998. Three years later, Hellmann won the Kleist Prize, an important prize for German-language literature, becoming the first writer to win the prize for a debut novel. The book contains a total of nine short stories of the same title "On this Side of the Oder", taking the monotony of modern urban life as a starting point for a whole generation of young men and women. In language of unmatched simplicity, indifference, and precision, Hellman Outlines a world of happenings and fortuitous relationships - where happiness is experienced as a memory or a desire, but never as a present reality.
