　　作者简介

　　王三义，上海大学文学院历史学系教授，博士生导师。先后就读于陕西师范大学历史系、南开大学历史系和西北大学中东研究所。在南京大学历史系从事博士后研究（2005-2007）。主要研究领域：中东近代经济史、晚期奥斯曼帝国史。出版专著《工业文明的挑战与中东近代经济的转型》《英国在中东的委任统治研究》《晚期奥斯曼帝国研究（1792-1918）》《帝国之衰：奥斯曼帝国史六论》等，合著《近代东方国家的变革》，译著《伟大属于罗马》，文集《学问与饭碗》《兴废与进退》《个人与时代》等。主持国家社科基金重大项目“中东经济通史”。

A brief introduction to the Reign of Empires

From the court to the local, from the military to the religious, how did the Ottoman Empire, which originated from nomadic tribes, acquire the institutional tension to match its vast territory behind the political ecology formed under long-term autocracy? How to maintain the effectiveness of the institutions on which long term rule depends? How does it hide the root cause that makes it so thin and difficult to return?

This book surveys the unique institutional system that the Ottoman Empire created to rule its vast territory, exploring the empire's creativity in institution-building beyond its deep courts, bloody political intrigues, and single military expansions. As the first domestic monographic study of the political system of the Ottoman Empire, this book draws on a large number of original materials, combs the institutional structure and evolution of the empire from its peak to its collapse, interprets the gains and losses of Ottoman political rule, and explores the internal logic of the rise and fall of the empire.

About the author

Wang Sanyi, Professor, Department of History, School of Liberal Arts, Shanghai University. He studied in the history Department of Shaanxi Normal University, the History Department of Nankai University and the Middle East Research Institute of Northwest University. Postdoctoral research at the Department of History, Nanjing University (2005-2007). His research interests include modern economic history of the Middle East and late Ottoman Empire. The Challenge of Industrial Civilization and the Economic Transformation of the Middle East in Modern Times, A Study of the British Mandate in the Middle East, A Study of the Late Ottoman Empire (1792-1918), and The Decline of Empires: Six Treatises on the History of the Ottoman Empire, co-authored The Transformation of Modern Eastern Countries, translated Greatness Belongs to Rome, collected works Learning and Rice Bowl, Rise and Fall, Individual and Times, etc. He presided over the major project of the National Social Science Fund "General Economic History of the Middle East".
