We, the Submerged

In the southern Danish port town of Mastal, people have lived off the sea for generations. This king of the sea, is the background of their lives, but also their destiny. When men became sailors, they went to many ports around the world, and many of them narrowly escaped death and ended up at the bottom of the sea. The women would stay on land, fearful day and night, waiting for their lovers to return. Generations of young souls were drawn to the song of the Sirens, grew up in the absence of their fathers, and then became sailors again.

In 1848, the town was caught up in the First War of Dende, and not all those who fought for glory survived. Lauris Madsen survived because of a mysterious pair of boots, but soon fled back to sea and never heard from again. After his son Albert inevitably becomes a sailor, he embarks alone on a long journey to find his father. Years later, with a severed head, he returns to a town increasingly dominated by women, until he meets a boy and a widow. And this woman is determined to end it all, to free everyone from that untamed ocean...

There are the ordinary life of a small town and the drama of children, but also the adventures of the sea and the wars that destroy the human soul. The novel takes the reader through the lives of three generations, two world wars, a hundred years; It has also sailed across a vast world: from the barren rocks of Newfoundland to the lush plantations of Samoa, from Tasmania's lamest pub to the frozen shores of northern Russia. It is a coming-of-age story, a family saga, and an elegy to a bygone era that gives us a timeless picture of the absurdity and cruelty of fate, of human violence and love, passion and vulnerability.

CarstenJensen (1952 -) is a famous contemporary Danish writer and critic. His book I Have Seen the Beginning of the World won the Danish Booksellers Award (1996). In 2006, his long epic work "We, the Submerged" from his hometown of Mastal town was published and won the Danske Bank Literature Prize, which is known as the "Danish Booker Prize", and was immediately regarded as a classic of contemporary Nordic literature, which has sold copyright in 20 countries and sold more than 600,000 copies worldwide.
