　　托尼·朱特（TonyJudt，1948—2010）当代最著名的欧洲问题和欧洲思想研究专家。1948年出生于英国伦敦，毕业于剑桥大学国王学院和巴黎高等师范学校，后执教于剑桥、牛津、伯克利和纽约大学。1995年创办雷马克研究所，专事研究欧洲问题。经常为《纽约时报》、《泰晤士报文学副刊》、《新共和》等撰稿。著有《重估价值：反思被遗忘的20世纪》、《战后欧洲史》、《责任的重负：布鲁姆、加缪、阿隆和法国的20世纪》、《思虑二十世纪》等作品。其中《战后欧洲史》被认为是无法被超越的史学著作。2007年获汉娜·阿伦特奖，2009年因他的“智慧、洞察力和非凡的勇气”获奥威尔终身成就奖。2010年8月因病去世。

About the author:

TonyJudt (1948-2010) is the most famous contemporary expert on European issues and European thought. Born in 1948 in London, England, he graduated from King's College, Cambridge and Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris before teaching at Cambridge, Oxford, Berkeley and New York University. In 1995, he founded the Remak Institute, which specializes in European studies. He is a frequent contributor to The New York Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The New Republic, and others. He is the author of Revaluing: Reflections on the Forgotten Twentieth Century, A History of Postwar Europe, The Burden of Responsibility: Bloom, Camus, Aron, and the Twentieth Century in France, and Thinking About the Twentieth Century. Among them, The History of Post-war Europe is regarded as a historical work that cannot be surpassed. He received the Hannah Arendt Award in 2007 and the Orwell Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 for his "wisdom, insight and extraordinary courage". He died in August 2010.

Translator's Introduction:

Du Xianju graduated from Peking University, then went to Oxford University in the United Kingdom to study, and transferred to Brandeis University in the United States to complete her doctorate. He studied and did research at Hebrew University and Harvard University. His research interests include Middle East history and diplomacy, and the history of diplomatic relations between China and Israel. He has translated the Modern History of Israel and authored the History of China-Israel Diplomatic Relations.
