Content introduction
Can materials only be manipulated as passive components? Will it become "living," able to sense its environment, adapt to it, and assemble itself together? If you're interested in these questions and want to anticipate the next big change in materials, The New Materials Revolution is a must-read.
Skylar Tibbits, founder of MIT's Self-Assembly Laboratory, presents novel design and manufacturing methods in the field of materials, demonstrating the surprising but still untapped capabilities of materials; Using a seemingly entropy-reversing approach to create simple material "robots" that can be programmed to "come alive" everyday objects or environments; Challenging the traditional notion that things break down over time and that objects can get better over time; In the near future, we will be able to program materials to become more active, more adaptable, and to evolve on their own.
