"Read the distant mountain" content introduction

The book is the beginning of Cambridge scholar Robert MacFarlan's "Walking Literature trilogy".

Only three centuries ago, mountains were seen as a crude creation of nature, "boils" on the skin of the earth. It is widely believed that evil spirits roam the slopes of high mountains and that spirits live at the top - don't climb them. How did people's fear of mountains turn into fascination and yearning over 300 years?

Robert McFarren steps out of his study on treacherous mountain trails - from the glacier-etched valleys of Scotland's Cairngorms, to the snow-melting ridges of the Alps, to the cirque of the Tianshan Mountains, enduring frostbite and rockfalls, to experience first hand the temptation of the alpine world's isolation and peace, desolation and wonder, danger and hope.

The journey to the steep mountains of ice also calls forth generations of bodies and minds to the mountains, and ultimately maps out our hidden inner landscape: what we call "mountains" are the joint product of the physical form of the earth and the human imagination, the mountains of our mind.
