A brief introduction to Into the Wild

Climbing the beech trees on the outskirts of the city and looking at the urban night scene, Robert McFarlan could not restrain his imagination and longing for the wilderness. Is there any wilderness left in the world? He decided to leave behind the map of roads and buildings, to go to the unknown Spaces of the map, to find the wild hidden in the deep valleys of the great valleys.

From the beaches of Wales to the salt marshes of Essex, from the Red Peaks of Scotland to the sunken roads of Dorset, he climbed, strolled and swam by day, and slept on cliffs, in ancient gorges and deep forests by night. He searches isolated islands for recluses, stumbles upon the remains of world wars on headlands, follows deer into the forest, and elegantly weaves history, memory and landscape into a literary map of the wilderness that records falcons and rocks.

As a guide, McFarlan takes us out of the confines of the city, walking and writing each chapter as a novel journey out of the human perspective - beyond the human world, there is a larger world. Finally, we follow him back to the beech tree, and the night of the city in the distance is renewed, with the spark of the wild.

Like the mementoes we pick up along the way, we will recover our awareness and imagination of the world around us, and the wilderness is present in the everyday and in the vicinity - the weeds poking out of the road, a woodland in the suburbs, a sunset over our station, an ant colony leaning over - in every moment of our tender gaze at the present.
