《玛雅通史》内容简介

　　本书作者迈克尔·D.科是古代中美洲和玛雅研究领域的领军人物，一生致力于探索古老而神秘的玛雅文明。他认为，应该为玛雅文明撰写一本简明扼要，同时相当准确完备的书，供学生、旅行者和对此有兴趣的公众参考，本书首版因此于1966年问世。随着众多学者、专家在相关领域不断收获新成果，科也持续更新、修订其中内容，本书已是第十版。

　　从第九版开始，科邀请其学生、玛雅文字和社会学权威斯蒂芬·休斯顿合作，以各自成就共同完善本书。不幸的是，在第十版的筹备过程中科离世了，享年90岁，本书成了这位学者穷尽一生为对玛雅文明感兴趣的大众读者留下的宝贵遗产。

Introduction to the General History of the Maya

Michael D. Coe is a leader in the field of ancient Mesoamerican and Maya studies and has devoted his life to exploring the ancient and mysterious Maya civilization. He believed that a concise, accurate and complete book on the Mayan civilization should be written for students, travelers, and the interested public, and the first edition of the book was published in 1966. As many scholars and experts continue to harvest new achievements in related fields, the Section also continues to update and revise its contents, and this book is the tenth edition.

Beginning with the ninth edition, Coe invited one of his students, Stephen Houston, an authority on Mayan writing and sociology, to collaborate on the book's achievements. Unfortunately, Coe died at the age of 90 during the preparation of the tenth edition, and this book remains a valuable legacy of the scholar's lifetime for the general public interested in Mayan civilization.

This book introduces the rise and fall of the Mayan society in chronological order, and explains in detail the ways and causes of the expansion of the local ethnic group from the aspects of ecological environment, language distribution, agricultural development, etc. Through archaeological findings such as buildings, inscriptions, sculptures, and utensils, the life and culture of the local people for thousands of years are restored, and the suffering and injustice of the Maya people are also given voice. And show what modern Mayan society looks like. The book is accompanied by a guide to current Mayan sites.

StephenHouston

Professor of social sciences at Brown University, who has been awarded the Quetzal Order, Guatemala's highest honor, by the president of Guatemala, for his contributions to the study and promotion of Mayan culture. His latest book is The Channel of Genius: Young People in Classic Mayan Art and Writing.
