Oscar Wilde's life - like his wisdom - was full of paradoxes. He was both an early advocate and a victim of "celebrity culture." His achievements are often underestimated and his successes dismissed. He had a gift for comedy, but struggled to write tragedy. He is an unabashed snob who delights in exposing the dark side of society. He put on the disdainful look of a fopper, but often performed generous acts of kindness. Although happily married, he was madly in love with men, and thus brought disaster upon himself at the top of his career. He defied authority and resorted to the law to preserve his love for Lord Alfred Douglas. He loved the company of the fashionable crowd and died almost unaccompanied: only a dozen people stood beside his grave when he was buried.

Using new material that has come to light over the past three decades - including newly discovered letters, documents, and full transcripts of libel trials - Matthew Sturgis seeks to bring Wilde "back to his time and reality" from the perspective of a historian rather than a literary critic.

MatthewSturgis is an English historian and biographer who focuses on the cultural world of the late Victorian era.
