In a lab at the Institute for Sustainable Heritage in London, scientists are trying to build a "conscious archive" of collective olfactory experiences - a museum of odour memories, in order to preserve those of historical value and be able to recall them in the future. With this in mind, author Roberta Diana began with a survey of olfactory history and culture to write the Museum of Smell. She collected 38 scents and investigated the source of each scent, digging deep into its connection to literary culture and its use in perfumes, including the smell of the sea, the smell of dirt after rain, the smell of freshly cut grass, the smell of childhood - sharpened pencils, circuses, asphalt on the road... These most familiar smells, in the author's sweeping and poetic narrative, have a unique ability to awaken memories.

About the author

Roberta Diana is a storyteller who loves her five senses. Of all the senses, taste and smell are her favorites. The multifaceted nature of her career has emerged from this: for example, her work FoodStylist tells about food through images, and PerfumeWriter describes smells through words. She has also written a number of cooking-related books and won the Culinary Literature Award twice. The Museum of Smell was her last book on literature and the senses. In 2023, Diana writes, reads, and produces the Scent of Fate podcast, which continues her research on smell and emotion, collecting stories of celebrities whose lives have been changed by a certain smell.
