《驼背将军》内容简介

　　荷马李身患残疾，病弱的身躯、成长的经历以及特定的时代特点使得他选择与中国的变革力量结盟，试图参与到变革中国的活动中，并将其作为自身的使命。庚子事变时他曾加入到保皇派的勤王活动中，后回美积极地组建华人军事培训学校；梁启超、康有为访美时，荷马李曾热情地陪同。他写作的《无知之勇》轰动一时并在历史中回响。他参与拟定“红龙计划”、与孙中山进行“长堤会谈”，后成为孙中山的军事顾问，武昌首义后陪同孙中山回中国，终因中风而回美，不久去世。他一生短暂，却充满传奇。

　　荷马李一生与中国有不解之缘，但中国国内对其研究甚少。本书是国内关于荷马李的第一本学术专著，利用英、中、日三个语种的档案、报刊、文集、日记、回忆录等各种类型的资料，试图从情感史的视角出发，运用文献分析法、比较研究法、心理分析等方法，就荷马李如何深入地参与到中国的变革之中，他与梁启超、康有为、孙中山的关系，他的军事观点和论著及其影响，他如何动员美国人参与中国变革等问题进行论述。通过本书，读者可以了解到中国近代变革历程中改良派和革命派之间既共生又斗争及此消彼长的关系、改良和革命势力对华侨影响力的消长，并在一定程度上丰富对于民间外交、中美关系的认识，加深对于孙中山以及中国那段改良和革命历史的理解。

　　陈丹，北京大学历史学博士，曾受国家留学基金委项目资助到美国加州大学伯克利分校访学一年，现为兰州大学历史文化学院教授，中国近现代史专业硕士研究生导师，主要研究方向为近现代中外关系史、近现代中外文化交流史等。曾出版《清末考察政治大臣出洋研究》《影视中的近代中国与世界》《战争预言者荷马李著作选译》等；发表论文有《平冈浩太郎访华及清政府的因应》《孙中山与荷马李〈无知之勇〉在日本的译介》等。

Homer Lee's disability, weak body, growing up experience and specific characteristics of The Times made him choose to ally with the power of change in China, trying to participate in the activities of change in China, and take it as his own mission. During the Boxer Incident, he joined in the royalist activities to serve the king, and later returned to the United States to actively set up a Chinese military training school; When Liang Qichao and Kang Youwei visited the United States, Homer Li warmly accompanied them. His book The Courage of Ignorance became a sensation and reverberated through history. He participated in the formulation of the "Red Dragon Plan" and the "Long Dike talks" with Sun Yat-sen, and later became Sun's military adviser, accompanied Sun Yat-sen to China after the first rebellion, and eventually returned to the United States due to a stroke, and died soon after. His life was short, but full of legend.

Homer Lee has an indissoluble bond with China throughout his life, but there are few researches on him in China. This book is the first academic monograph on Homer and Lee in China. Using various types of materials such as archives, newspapers, anthologies, diaries and memoirs in English, Chinese and Japanese languages, it attempts to analyze how Homer and Lee deeply participated in the changes in China from the perspective of emotional history and by means of documentary analysis, comparative research and psychological analysis. He discussed his relations with Liang Qichao, Kang Youwei, Sun Yat-sen, his military views and writings and their influence, and how he mobilized Americans to participate in the reform of China. Through this book, readers can understand the symbiosis and struggle between reformists and revolutionaries in the course of China's modern revolution, the relationship between reformists and revolutionary forces, the rise and fall of the influence of revolutionary forces on overseas Chinese, and to a certain extent, enrich the understanding of non-governmental diplomacy, Sino-American relations, and deepen the understanding of Sun Yat-sen and China's reform and revolutionary history.

About the author

Chen Dan has a PhD in history from Peking University. He was sponsored by the China Scholarship Council as a visiting scholar at the University of California, Berkeley for one year. He is now a professor at the School of History and Culture of Lanzhou University and a master's degree supervisor in modern and modern Chinese history. He has published Studies on Political Ministers going Abroad in the Late Qing Dynasty, Modern China and the World in Film and Television, Selected Translations of the Works of War Prophet Homer Lee, etc.; His publications include "Kotaro Hiraoka's Visit to China and the Qing Government's Response" and "Sun Yat-sen and Homer Lee's Translation of the Courage of Ignorance in Japan".
