柯启玄（NormanA.Kutcher），现为雪城大学（SyracuseUniversity）麦克斯韦尔公民与公共事务学院历史系教授，中国人民大学清史研究所高级研究员，主要研究方向为中国古代史，尤其在清史研究方面颇有建树，在《亚洲研究期刊》和《哈佛亚洲研究学报》等权威期刊发表多篇研究成果，著有《晚期帝制中国的葬仪：孝道与国家》（MourninginLateImperialChina:FilialPietyandtheState）。

Introduction to the content of Eunuch and Emperor under the Reign of Sheng Qing
The Eunuchs and the Emperor under the Prosperous Qing Dynasty provides a new perspective for interpreting the relationship between the eunuchs and imperial power in the first 150 years of the Qing Dynasty. This period covers the three most important emperors in Qing history - Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong - whose ideas of rule were deeply influenced by the corruption of Ming eunuchs. In this groundbreaking work, the author explores how the Qing emperors managed to avoid repeating the mistakes of eunuchs, and how eunuchs achieved power and status within these constraints. The book depicts the great eunuchs who were once loyal but ended up betraying the Lord, and also shows the lives of ordinary eunuchs. These stories are full of contradictions, big and small, and provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of the Qing Palace.
About the author
NormanA Kutcher is a professor of history at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at SyracuseUniversity and a senior researcher at the Institute of Qing History at Renmin University of China. His main research interests are ancient Chinese history, and he has made great achievements in the study of Qing history. In the journal of Asian studies and the harvard journal of Asian studies and other authoritative journals published many research results, author of "the rites in late imperial China: filial piety and state (MourninginLateImperialChina: FilialPietyandtheState).
