Brief introduction of Nine Roads
British anthropologist Stadlen eight years of Indian research accumulated
Intimate dialogue across languages, cultures and beliefs
The marriage life and life experience of nine women
For a long time, India seemed to be synonymous with "chaos" and "backwardness" in the eyes of developed countries. British anthropologist Lexi Stadlen, however, is committed to breaking down the Western centrist discourse that has shaped India. She travels alone to an island on the eastern edge of India and conducts 16 months of fieldwork in Muslim villages on the island, ultimately focusing her narrative on nine Muslim women, tracing their small and extraordinary daily lives.
It is a deep, lasting encounter, a gift from one woman to another, and an ethnography for all women: discarding all established theories and obscure terms, it is a true record of what one has seen, heard, and felt, presenting the complex inner world of women. In her dialogue with them, we can touch the most real female friendship, when the differences between old and new ideas and the contest of interests fade, the most solid is always empathy, understanding and mutual help.
