本书以中文打字机为对象，追溯了中文与现代信息技术相适应的历史。近现代以来，汉字作为非字母文字，在技术语言现代化的过程中遭遇了来自字母文字中心主义的重重阻碍，其一便是无法适应西式打字机。本书通过讲述中文打字机的发明历程，展示了汉语世界的机械革命，探索了中文寻求生存、适应且影响科技变革的历史。书中描述了在近一个世纪之间，中文使用者在发明中文打字机的过程中进行的各种尝试、经历种种失败或成功的故事，由此反映了中文如何突破字母文字霸权而融入全球化信息时代，重新获得独特地位。

This book takes the Chinese typewriter as its object and traces the history of the Chinese language's adaptation to modern information technology. Since modern times, Chinese characters, as non-alphabetic characters, have encountered many obstacles from alphabetic literalism in the process of technical language modernization, one of which is that it cannot adapt to Western typewriters. By telling the story of the invention of the Chinese typewriter, this book shows the mechanical revolution of the Chinese world and explores the history of the Chinese language as it sought to survive, adapt, and influence technological change. The book describes the various attempts, failures and success stories of Chinese users in the process of inventing Chinese typewriters in the past century, which reflects how the Chinese language broke through the hegemony of alphabetic characters and integrated into the global information age, and regained its unique status.

Thomas S.Mullaney holds a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University and is currently a professor of history at Stanford University, specializing in Chinese history. He is the author of "Reconciliation with the State: Ethnic Groups in Modern China" and "The Way to Establish the State: National Identity in Modern China".
