Introduction to the content of Ritual Process
This book is one of the classics of anthropology, up there with the great works of Levi-Strauss and Eliard.
In this book, Turner explores the place of ritual in the Ndembu tribe of Africa through field trips to the group. Turner expanded the concepts of "threshold" and "blending" and developed traditional structuralism. At the same time, Van Genep, Max Weber and Durkheim all tried to unify all cultural behaviors in a super structure and put forward a universal model covering all. Turner broke through the traditional static social structure study and investigated ritual in the social process of movement. He regarded society as the dialectical unity of integration and structure. Thus there is the process of "differentiation - threshold - reintegration", which is the result of the interaction between structure and anti-structure.
About the author
British anthropologist, representative of the Manchester School of symbolic Anthropology and anthropology, was quite active and prolific in the 1960s and 1970s. Turner's anthropological research mainly focuses on symbolic ritual, through which he grasps the recombination of social structure. Turner's works include: The Division and Continuation of an African Society (1957), The Forest of Symbols: The Ndembu Ritual Treatise (1967), Drums of Suffering (1968), Ritual Process (1969), and Drama, Scene and Metaphor (1974). Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure is a masterpiece of Turner's analysis of ritual behavior and symbolism, which has established Turner's academic status in the field of anthropology.
