Poetry is a language that is structured in a particular way, so that it is remembered and cherished. It is these works that have not yet been forgotten that this book deals mainly with English and American poetry, as well as other European and Eastern poetry. Heroic epics such as Gilgamesh and Beowulf, legendary ballads such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Faery Queen, medieval masters such as Dante and Peter Arch, modernist poets such as Wallace Stevens and Langston Hughes... There are also female poets of various historical periods, such as Bishop and Plath, which must be mentioned. Together, they make up this book's stellar constellation of poets, whose stories and writings have been written for four thousand years.

JohnCarey is an English literary critic who graduated from St John's College, Oxford, and retired as Emeritus Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford. He was President of the Booker Prize Committee twice, in 1982 and 2004, and President of the jury of the inaugural Booker International Prize in 2005. His published works include The Joy of Reading, Intellectuals and the Public, What's the Use of Art, etc.

Huang Fuhai, executive director of Shanghai Translators Association, director of Shanghai Poetry Society, member of Shanghai Writers Association. He graduated from Fudan University and majored in English and American literature. He studied at Leeds University and majored in British poetry.
